Tower Defense Game Guide
The goal in any tower defense game is simple - stop the creeps from reaching your base or stealing your goodies. There are dozens of variations but the basics are the same in each game. This guide details all you need to know to hit the ground running and build a strong and versatile defense.

Creeps
The bad guys. These invading enemies attack in waves and it's up to you to build towers and destroy them. They come in all shapes and sizes with different strengths and weaknesses. Some are slow but strong others fast and weak and there can be any combination in between. Some fly, some burrow and some even turn invisible. It is best to build a variety of towers so you can take out all of the different kinds. You are usually rewarded with money for each creep you kill; the harder the kill the bigger the reward. You can use this cash to buy new towers or upgrade your existing towers.
Bosses
Every now and then expect to face a giant creep. These guys usually travel alone but are far stronger than any other creep!
Placing Towers
In some tower defense games, such as Desktop Tower Defence, you can place towers anywhere on the screen and approaching creeps must walk around them. This can be used to your advantage by building a maze that will impede the creeps progress and give your towers more time to attack. Other games have a static map and the enemies walk along a fixed path. In these games you must place your towers in the designated area – usually anywhere off the path. Some tower defense games take it even further and have different designated areas for different types of tower. A superb example of this is Cursed Treasure in which fire towers may only be placed stone, arrow towers on grass and freeze towers on ice. In addition some areas of the map will boost the properties of any tower built there.
Upgrading Towers
As time goes by the incoming enemies increase in number, become stronger and faster. The towers you built earlier in the game just won't be able to keep up. The solution is to upgrade your towers as soon as you can. Sometimes this just means hitting the upgrade button to increase the power and fire rate of the tower. In other games you can upgrade towers in many different ways. Gemcraft for instance offers an incredible amount of flexibility when upgrading towers. Any number of tower combinations can be made by combining different types of gem. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean!
Tower Types
Here are some typical tower types you will find in a tower defense game:
Normal Tower: Shoots projectiles at passing creeps.
Rapidfire Tower: Quickly shoots projectiles at passing creeps.
Freeze Tower: Temporarily slows down creeps.
Shock Tower: Temporarily stuns creeps.
Area Blast Tower: Cause injury to all nearby creeps.
Ricochet Tower: Projectiles fired by this tower bounce from one creep to another.
Avatars
There are a growing number of tower defense games where you are able to control an avatar. This is a character which you have full control of. You are able to move them anywhere (typically with the arrow keys) and attack the incoming creeps.
Game Target
The goal of a traditional tower defense game is to prevent too many creeps from reaching your base. Some games have shaken this up a bit though by placing items in your base that the creeps are trying to steal. This means you can also shoot the creeps as they return from your base with the treasure.
